Twice-Told Tales. Boston: American Stationers Company, 1837. First edition Bound by Riviere & Son with double gilt ruled borders, gilt ruled compartments and gold-tooled doublures, a hallmark of the bindery. Robert Riviere (1808-82) set up his bindery in Bath in 1829 and moved the business to London about 1840 and was regularly commissioned by Queen Victoria. After his death a son-in-law continued the business until 1939, when the binding tools were acquired by Bayntun of Bath. A fine collector’s copy with only a trifle foxing and an otherwise unblemished interior. The binding is near fine with only the slightest rubbing; the spine is not faded and the leather is supple. Bound without the publisher’s catalog. As noted in BAL, this copy has the error 78 for 76, fifth entry, table of contents. BAL 7581.
