The United States at One View. New York: Humphrey Phelps, 1847. Published and sold by Humphrey Phelps, no. 4 Spruce-Street, New York, this broadside depicts in a series of tables a statistical snapshot of America, including “Population of 150 of the Principal CITIES and TOWNS of the UNITED STATES,” Principal RAILROADS in the United States”, “HEIGHTS of the Principal MOUNTAINS in the United States”, along with tables on the principal rivers, religious denominations, presidents, travelling distances, principal canals, and steam-boat routes. Flanking the second line of the title are the dates “1776” and “1847”. Single sheet, 74 x 56 cm. The broadside is enhanced by an elaborate full decorative border (vines wrapped around a column). Centered in the broadside are two bordered illustrations, the first depicting a reproduction of two continental dollar bills with statistics stating amounts of continental money issued in 1775, 1777, and 1779. The second illustration depicts a reproduction of the 50-dollar bill dated 1847. The decorative border along with the interior illustrations are enhanced by hand coloring. Closed tear extending into the “Religious Denominations” table in the lower left of the sheet, minimally affecting the text. Some professional restoration to the margins, primarily to the right margin and not affecting the text. Overall, a bright and attractive copy. OCLC locates two copies (date of 1845 flanking the second line of the title), at the Massachusetts Historical Society and the American Antiquarian Society. This would appear to be a later, likely second, issue of this broadside with none appearing in OCLC.
