Signed limited edition hand-printed wood engraving of Henry David Thoreau with a passage from Walden: “I learned this, at least, by my experiment: that if one advances confidently in the direction of his dreams, and endeavours to live the life he has imagined, he will meet with a success unexpected in common hours.” Michael McCurdy was born in New York City and attended the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and illustrated over 200 books. He received his first printing press around the age of 12, spurring a life-long devotion to the craft. As a conscientious objector during the Vietnam War, he served as an orderly at the Boston City Hospital. He operated the Penmaen Press (1968 – 1985) and published trade and limited editions of works by William Saroyan, Joyce Carol Oates, Allen Ginsberg, Richard Eberhart and others. He won many awards.
