He received his first printing press around the age of 12, spurring a life-long devotion to the craft. As a conscientious objector during the Vietnam War, he served as an orderly at the Boston City Hospital. He operated the Penmaen Press (1968 – 1985) and published trade and limited editions of works by William Saroyan, Joyce Carol Oates, Allen Ginsberg, Richard Eberhart and others. He won many awards.
